Abstract

Objective: To compare the effects of hypertonic saline, acetic acid and acetic acid-hypertonic saline solution (AAHS)-enhanced hepatic radiofrequency and to determine the optimal solution in order to maximize its effect on the extent of the RFA-induced coagulation necrosis. Material and Methods: Tweleve pieces of fresh ex vivo pork liver were assigned to one of the four groups: group A: RFA alone; group B: RFA with 36% NaCl injection; group C: RFA with 50% acetic acid injection; group D: RFA with 50% AAHS. A volume of 1ml various solution were injected into the liver respectively before RFA. Twelve lesions were obtained in each group of liver. The lowest impedance value and persistent time were recorded. Then the long and transverse diameter of the necrotic lesion were measured, the areas of radiofrequency induced coagulation were calculated. Finally, the values were evaluated statistically. Results: The lowest impedance in group A is the highest. The lowest impedance value in group A were compared with other groups, the difference was statistically significant. However, compared the lowest impedance value in group B with that in group C, there was no significant difference. Radiofrequency enery persistent time in group A was significantly shorter than those in group B, C or D(P<0.05). Radiofrequency persistent time in group B was the longest, compared group B with other groups, the difference was significant. Coagulation necrosis areas in group D was maximum, compared group D with other groups, the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05). Conclusion: Combined 50% AAHS injection and RFA can increase the dimension of coagulation necrosis in the ex vivo pork liver.
